Is PRP Therapy Safe? A Plain-English Answer for Men Over 50

What platelet-rich plasma actually is, why it carries such a low risk profile, and the questions worth asking your physician before treatment.

PRP comes from your own body

Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. It is spun in a medical-grade centrifuge so that the platelets — the cells that carry your natural growth factors — are concentrated and separated from everything else.

Because nothing synthetic is introduced, there is no risk of allergic rejection and no chemical interaction with medication you already take. This is why PRP is described as autologous treatment.

What the procedure feels like

A compounded topical anaesthetic is applied for 25 to 30 minutes before treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain, and the entire appointment is usually finished within an hour.

You can drive yourself home and resume ordinary daily activity the same day.

Questions to ask before you book

Ask who will perform the procedure and whether they are GMC registered. Ask how the plasma is prepared, and ask for a realistic timeline for results rather than a guarantee.

A responsible clinic will tell you plainly if you are not a suitable candidate. Results may vary; always consult a qualified physician.
